Landcatch / Hendrix Genetics
Hendrix Genetics is a multi-species animal breeding, genetics and technology company that is passionate about animal breeding. They have breeding programs in laying hens, turkeys, traditional poultry, swine, salmon, shrimp and trout.
It all starts with an idea
In 2023, they undertook a project to install heat pumps and oxygen generation at their Ormsary production site. NLC were appointed to secure grant funding, project manage the works and administer the grant claims process.

Project Objectives
The objective of the project was to contribute to delivering on the company's long-term sustainability goals, one of which is to achieve climate (should that be carbon rather than climate ?) neutrality. The direct benefits include:
Reduced carbon footprint
Improved energy efficiency
Reduced road haulage (fuel and oxygen)
Improved fish health and growth by optimising water temperature and oxygen content
Improved reliability of equipment and hence security of supply for production
Reduced operating costs for energy, in particular kerosene for water heating
Reduced the cost of maintaining oxygen levels in water used for fish growth
Scope of Works
The project involved the replacement of two existing 500kW kerosene boilers with two new energy efficient heat pumps, and supplementing the existing bulk oxygen supply with on-site oxygen generation.
NLC cope of works was:
to draft and submit an application to Marine Fund Scotland – including drafting the narrative, calculating the carbon savings and quantifying the benefits.
to secure quotations for suitable plant and equipment
to oversee the procurement installation and commissioning
to undertake the project monitoring and reporting
to administer the grant claims process
The project has delivered significant benefits both financial (cost savings) and environmental (carbon emissions reduction). The kerosene boilers have not been switched on since the heat pumps were installed. The improvements in oxygenation and temperature regulation have improved fish health and growth.
